The Department of Education Looking at For Profit Colleges

Online education and Financial Aid

Image via Wikipedia

When I decided to go back to school I knew I wanted to attend an online University. I started making calls to some of the bigger online Universities like The University of Phoenix and Kaplan University. That was a real eye opener. These “admissions advisers” are some of the craziest sales people I’ve ever spoken too. They knew next to nothing about the actual program of study, lied their asses off about federal financial aid, exaggerated what sort of job the degree can qualify you for, and were generally annoying.

The first thing that bothered me was the obvious desperation to enroll students. They didn’t care what sort of grades I had in High School or at the Community College. I thought it was supposed to be challenging to get into college. The University of Phoenix was the worst. Their tuition is outrageous, they have a horrid withdrawal policy, and they wanted to enroll me in classes (legally obligating me to pay them)   before my application for federal financial aid was completed. These people would not leave me alone, I had to tell them I was dying and if they didn’t stop calling me I would sue them for harassment! Guess what, I still get an e-mail from them every 3 months.

I can’t help but wonder how many people these schools take advantage of every year 😦 I ran across a New York Times article, Scrutiny Takes Toll on For-Profit College Company, reporting some of the problems with Kaplan University and a few lawsuits in the making Yay!

If you or someone you know is considering one of these schools please be careful and take some time to do some research, if a school pushes you to enroll ASAP no matter what, tell them where to shove it.

I heart Dr. Who and other random stuff

My youngest is only 13 months old and is already constantly hunting my coffee. Why oh why do my children want to drink my precious coffee? Don’t they understand, I NEED my coffee, I need it in my cup, not on the floor or in their bellies.

I’m having trouble getting started on this new class, I suppose watching old episodes of Dr. Who when I should be studying might have something to do with that. I just can’t help it. I love Dr. Who.

I saw an episode of Diego (you know, Dora’s cousin) and they cleaned up an oil spill in the ocean with this vacuum thing. I hate preschool shows, they are so far removed from reality they make me want to vomit. Speaking of preschool shows why are all these pre-k cartoons running around without parental supervision? Dora and Diego run all over the world with talking animals, Max and Ruby don’t seem to have parents at all, those kids on Dragon Tales disappear for hours at a time and no one notices…the central theme of all of these shows must be parental neglect. Go on Kids, your parents are absent/neglectful they don’t care, it’s up to YOU to take care of everything!

Another class finished!

Love math 1

I finished my last math class this week. It’s a little bittersweet because I’m glad it’s done but I’m a geek and I love math so I’ll miss it a little. I’m actually surprised I got it finished on time because I’ve been sick and a couple of the little ones too. It’s been a long week. We’ve made some changes to the kids curriculum and we are loving it. I’ll be making a homeschool page on here when I find the time soon! I’ve got my girl hooked and she wants a blog (a video blog), because toys are just not enough these days. Some people’s children…

Monday madness

Of course I have to pick a Monday to get sick. A day when I have errands, lessons, and a bunch of homework that needs finished up. Not to mention trying to get the house put back together after it has been bombarded with a bunch of kids hopped up on Halloween candy! I feel like I’ve been hit by a van…and I have been hit by a van before so I REALLY know how it feels.

I am truly the luckiest mom though because when I spiked a fever this morning I got too go lay down and sleep (Thank you David you are a GOD). The kids tend to tone it down when I’m not feeling well too. I am so lucky 🙂

Random Tuesday Thoughts

Holy Crap (Fifteen Pounds of Candy)

The great candyfest is almost here, that means my totally ocd kids have too ask me how long until halloween at least 200 times a day. Even though there is a calender on the wall with the day clearly marked and my 8 year old has made dozens of paper countdowns over the last few weeks. Really, somebody save me.

Did I mention the ‘guess what I’m asking for’ game my 4 year old has started. It goes like this…”I want to play the game that goes round and round!” (computer game) What game is that you might ask, I did. Well it’s “THAT GAME THAT GOES ROUND AND ROUND” but I don’t know what sort of game that is or on which website full of preschool games it lives….

I would pack up and go to the park but there is no park other then the school, and school is in session. Driving 15 miles to the nearest public park is almost as bad as driving 40 miles for coffee.

It’s ok though, soon I will get to eat the baby’s Halloween candy and all will be better.

So this is my blog

A photo of a cup of coffee.

My world consists of my family and school and this crazy tiny town I managed to move us too. Having grown up all over the west coast I think I might go batshit crazy here if it weren’t for the internet, I’m sure many of you understand. I have 5 kids, yes you read that right, and yes I know what causes that 😉 One of the perks of moving to the middle of nowhere is I am not the only person within 200 miles that has more then 2. I can’t forget David…my bossy bossy man who is always ordering me around, “take your meds” and “you need your sleep” and “you should stop and eat”. Without him I would probably forget to eat and sleep so it’s a good thing he’s around 🙂

I go to school online (again…I live in the middle of nowhere) and I love it. I homeschool my oldest 2 kids, have 1 in K and the younger 2 home with us.

The nearest coffee stand is almost 40 miles from here, that’s an awful long drive for a mocha. No matter how much I love this place I will never forgive the lack of coffee….sweet tea is just not my thing.
