The Department of Education Looking at For Profit Colleges

Online education and Financial Aid

When I decided to go back to school I knew I wanted to attend an online University. I started making calls to some of the bigger online Universities like The University of Phoenix and Kaplan University. That was a real eye opener. These “admissions advisers” are some of the craziest sales people I’ve ever spoken too. They knew next to nothing about the actual program of study, lied their asses off about federal financial aid, exaggerated what sort of job the degree can qualify you for, and were generally annoying.

The first thing that bothered me was the obvious desperation to enroll students. They didn’t care what sort of grades I had in High School or at the Community College. I thought it was supposed to be challenging to get into college. The University of Phoenix was the worst. Their tuition is outrageous, they have a horrid withdrawal policy, and they wanted to enroll me in classes (legally obligating me to pay them)   before my application for federal financial aid was completed. These people would not leave me alone, I had to tell them I was dying and if they didn’t stop calling me I would sue them for harassment! Guess what, I still get an e-mail from them every 3 months.

I can’t help but wonder how many people these schools take advantage of every year 😦 I ran across a New York Times article, Scrutiny Takes Toll on For-Profit College Company, reporting some of the problems with Kaplan University and a few lawsuits in the making Yay!

If you or someone you know is considering one of these schools please be careful and take some time to do some research, if a school pushes you to enroll ASAP no matter what, tell them where to shove it.
